Women inmates with their children at the women's housing section at the central prison Mpimba, Bujumbura, Burundi. Built in 1959 by belgian colonial autorities for 800 prisonners, its population is today four times overcrowded with 3124 detainees, among them 86 women, 145 teenagers and 23 infants under 5 years age surviving under extreme poor sanitary and food conditions far away from any human rights standards. An impressive number of detainees have never been convicted, many are detained on alleged futile charges. Lots of prisonner files beeing lost by a disorganized jurisdictional system, a huge number of prisonners even don't knowing when their trial or release will occur. In 2007 the NGO "Community of Sant'Egidio" (www.santegidio.org) started to visit that prison every week, assisting prisonners to break their solitude while providing medical and food assistance since in Burundi prison detainees are provided no food by the autorities.
